A HANDFULL!! - In the world of turtles one would surmise this lady was the queen. According to Hilton Hendley, Berrien County state game and fish warden, she is 75 years old or older. Last Friday a.m., John Erickson and Eurey Flowers, brothers-in-law, thought they would try their luck on red breast at Sandy Bluff. As the two approached the bluff, old mother turtle was just finished laying her eggs. Probably with the thought of defending her nest or maybe just making a safe retreat back to the water in her mind, she clamped those powerful jaws into the side of a metal tub placed in front of her. So, tub and turtle were loaded in the truck for her first trip to town. The old girl weighed 50 pounds and, according to her fisherman friends, puts up a pretty good fight when disturbed.
